Please note, the information presented below represents the thoughts and actions of the "Preservation of the Depot" committee ONLY, and not the opinion of the Arts Commission

The Kendrick Railroad Depot FATE was determined at the Kendrick City Council meeting on Monday March 9, 2009 before another packed house of depot supporters and only two people representing the minority of citizens who want the depot to go away.  The motion on the table was to either accept a $50.00 bid to remove the Kendrick Depot or to accept the J-K Heritage Foundation’s $5,000 building offer and a 5-year lease on the land.  Additionally 223 people indicated at an on-line petition site their support as well as 60 hard copy signatures were acquired in the second survey in this 3-month effort that has indicted overwhelmingly our public supports keeping and preserving the depot.  The extent the Kendrick City Council are not listening to the public was demonstrated by they unanimously voting to accept the $50.00 bid by Timberworks Inc. to have the depot removed by June 9, 2009. The following has happened in May 2009:

  • Negotiations the City of Kendrick and Timberworks resulted in returning the depot to the City of Kendrick.
  • The City of Kendrick grant funded 5-RV site project, that played a perceived key part in this depot demolition need (since found to be untrue), has used all of the available ID Parks & Recreations grant funds. Their regulations require:
    • NO PROFITS be made by the RV site contrary to what the city has publicized as an intention.
    • The RV sites be the size and design as submitted on the grant application--THAT is not in evidence.
    • The grant funds, now being spent, have not resulted in a completed 5 site project. There IS evidence of 5 sites without removing the depot in the allocated space available.  That means City of Kendrick tax funds will be needed to fund the completion of this project.
  • The City of Kendrick is mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency to get costly permits and tests to move or demolish a public building due to toxic dust particle concerns.  The citizens of Kendrick's tax dollars is paying for this.  This cost would not be necessary IF the depot remained on site.
  • Upon having the depot gone a HUGE hole will remain. Additional costs will be incurred by the citizens of Kendrick to provide a fence around the area (replacing one eye sore for another) then more expense will be needed to acquire and bring in MANY loads of fill.
    •  ALL OF THIS COULD BE AVOIDED BY ALLOWING A WILLING GROUP OF CITIZENS TO PRESERVE THIS HISTORIC BUILDING USING NO CITY OF KENDRICK TAX FUNDS.  The City of Kendrick representatives continue, no matter the multiple costs, to remove this icon.
  •  Our goal of 500 people signing the on-line "Save the Depot" petition was achieved.  Review the supportive comments at: Petition for the Preservation of the Kendrick Depot

  • The new local Kendrick-Juliaetta & 7 Ridges historical society is called the J-K Heritage Foundation.  Strides forward toward preparing the organization to obtain an IRS tax-exempt status are in the works.  The first meeting on Thursday January 15, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. elected Sharon Harris as the President for a two year term.  The Foundation will be heavy on "work" meetings and light on "business" meetings with small groups being formed to take care of various needs.  If you are unable to donate time to this group your financial support will be most welcome.  The group have already determined the following projects:
  •  The group as a whole is tasked with obtaining area historic photos.  They will be scanned and archived, then returned unharmed to the owner.

  • Milt Patterson, is gathering everything ever written historically about our area.  He welcomes any old books, newspapers, or magazines with historical articles of our area from you.

  • Richard Abrams and Mike McGee as co-chairs will immediately begin a project to identify original owners of houses in Juliaetta and Kendrick.  Family’s living in an old home will be encouraged to provide a brief history of ownership transfers and anything historical about the home.  We are seeking history on homes that no longer exist as well, especially if it is accompanied by a photo.

  • Sharon Harris is heading up a past Post Office historical documentation project of our local area. If you have information or pictures of an old post offices please contact her.

  • Jan Patterson is particularly interested in collecting Bear Ridge area historical materials.

  • Mike McGee is our railroad expert.  He is the contact for any railroad related material.

  • Contact Sally Browning with any Juliaetta treasures.

Various levels of memberships are available and open to everyone.  Members have the opportunity to participate in the projects that most interest them. Contributors of information do not need to be members. The membership forms are available in person from Milt Patterson at Kendrick Hardware or by contacting Sharon Harris at (208) 289-4622 or sugie@dishmail.net
